Rosie Githinji Diversity in Journalism Award
The Rosie Githinji Diversity in Journalism Award will be awarded to an undergraduate student majoring in Mass Communications with the intent to pursue journalism after graduation. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA to be eligible. The award recipient will receive at least $100 to go toward his or her tuition payment.
The winning student will be selected by the Mass Communications faculty and staff based on the following criteria:
- A student’s leadership role in an organization that promotes diversity or inclusion. This can range from community volunteerism to involvement in a campus/student organization or completion of a special project or course, such as SIUE’s Interracial Communication class.
- Proof of writing/production pieces and/or photography/photojournalism (whether through class assignments, the “Alestle,” “Global Village,” internships or outside projects) that relate to any type of diversity or inclusion
- Diversity in the context of this award is defined as anything that explores or showcases an individual or group overcoming adversity or accomplishing a major task. Diversity in this instance includes age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, sexual orientation, etc.
