Ollie Mae Williams Merit Award

Scholarship support for SIUE students. Criteria for selection is as follows:

  • American citizenship.
  • Majors in the natural sciences (for this award defined as biology, chemistry, physics) .
  • A GPA of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) or better, overall or for the most recent year at SIUE. (Most recent year at SIUE is defined as two semesters with at least 18 credits earned, and including 9 credits earned in science and engineering courses.)
  • Junior standing.

Preferred consideration shall be given to residents of the Southwestern Illinois area. Priority consideration shall be given to black students who demonstrate success in overcoming educational and/or cultural disadvantages in preparing for a degree in Science or Engineering and whose efforts may serve as a role model for others.

Recipients will be chosen by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences which shall include 1) a faculty member from the academic units of recruitment, 2)a faculty member recommended by the SIUE Women’s Studies Coordinator, 3)in consultation with the national or local president of the Society for Ethnic and Special Studies (SESS) a faculty or academic staff members with the assigned responsibility in the recruitment and development of minority science or engineering students.
