Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate in the Sociology program. Criteria for selection is as follows:
- Undergraduate student majoring in Sociology
- Demonstrated financial need
If all other criteria are equal, preference will be given to a single mother, or the candidate most exemplifying the life of Karen Brown.
To receive the awards for the second semester, the recipient must still maintain a major in Sociology and have successfully completed the first semester with a minimum of 9 credit hours with a C or better average.
The recipient will be chosen by a three person committee which include the department Chair and may include the donor and other appointed faculty or emeritus faculty members appointed by the Chair of the Department of Sociology. The committee will make a recommendation of the top two candidates. The final selection will be made by the Chair of the Department. The Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the Fall Semester and/or Fall and Spring Semesters of an academic year. If awarded for two semesters, the amount of the award will be divided evenly between the two semesters. The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, and/or University Housing. The scholarship committee may consider exceptions to this as long as the additional use falls within the education cost definition and does not exceed the student’s financial aid. The annual scholarship amount will not exceed $5,000.
