Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate in the Sociology program who is a single parent with financial need, and in good academic standing. Financial need will be the primary criteria for selection. The annual scholarship amount will not exceed $5,000. The award may be renewed for a second year, but not beyond, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress and continuing to meet the stated criteria. If a recipient receives the scholarship for another year, another recipient will not be chosen that year. The recipient will be chosen by a three person committee which include the Chair and may include the donor and other appointed faculty or emeritus faculty members appointed by the Chair of the Department of Sociology. The committee will made a recommendation of the top two candidates. The final selection will be made by the Chair of the Department. The Karen Brown Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the Fall Semester and/or Fall and Spring Semesters of an academic year. If awarded for two semesters, the amount of the award will be divided evenly between the two semesters. To receive the award for the second semester, the recipient must still maintain a major in Sociology, have successfully completed the first semester with a minimum of 9 credit hours with a C or better average. The scholarship may be used for tuition, fees, and/or University Housing. The scholarship committee may consider exceptions to this as long as the additional use falls within the education cost definition and does not exceed the student’s financial aid.
