The Dr. Linda Markowitz Distinguished Scholar Award for Excellence in Sociology
The Dr. Linda Markowitz Distinguished Scholar Award for Excellence in Sociology is a one-time award designed to honor the career and dedication of Dr. Linda Markowitz. For over 20 years, Dr. Markowitz served as a distinguished professor of Sociology at Southern Illinois University, where she made significant contributions to the field of Sociology and impacted the lives of countless students. This scholarship aims to recognize a distinguished scholar of Sociology who embodies the values and morals Dr. Markowitz instilled in her students. The recipient of this award should demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and social justice, reflecting Dr. Markowitz’s lifelong dedication to advancing these principles. Through this scholarship, we hope to celebrate Dr. Markowitz’s legacy and inspire future generations of distinguished scholars in Sociology to continue her important work.
1. Financial Need: Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating financial need.
2. Distinguished Scholar in Sociology: Applicants must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the sociology program at an SIUE and have achieved a high level of academic excellence in the field of sociology. This may be demonstrated by a high GPA, membership in honor societies or other academic organizations, publication of scholarly articles, or other relevant achievements, including work experience.
3. Letter of Recommendation: Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a sociology professor or other academic advisor who can speak to their academic achievements and potential as a distinguished scholar in sociology.
