John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship

The John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship is an annual award given to a student majoring or minoring in philosophy.

The John Mareing Philosophy Scholarship requires students to submit an application. Students are eligible for the award if

  • they are a undergraduate student with a declared major or minor in philosophy
  • have earned at least 60 credit hours
  • have achieved a minimum 2.75 GPA

Students interested in being considered for the award must complete their application by uploading an essay of 1,500 to 2,500 words to Academic Works that addresses the relevance and role of philosophy in their life and society at large. This essay should also demonstrate superior critical thinking and writing skills. Additional information regarding this essay can be found at http://www.siue.edu/artsandsciences/philosophy/Mareing.shtml.

Students selected for this scholarship shall exemplify general conduct consistent with the highest standards of academic and personal integrity.

This scholarship will only be awarded in a given year to a student who submits a deserving paper, and who meets the GPA requirements. If the committee decides that there is more than one deserving paper, there is the option that multiple awards may be presented, with the available funds divided. Upon being awarded the John Mareing Scholarship in Philosophy, the student’s essay should be disseminated in a venue that would foster philosophical discussion. A student may receive this honor more than once, though it would require a new essay, on a different topic.

A student who is already receiving a premier SIUE scholarship that covers complete tuition costs would not be deemed eligible for this scholarship.
